Interview

1.What is your definition of women empowerment?

This is such a great question and for me – it would be giving all women irrespective of class, social status, colour, creed, religion – a voice to be heard. Be given economic independence, has passion along with the freedom to choose what they want to do and who they want to be. I would also add that an empowered woman is someone who is joyful, confident and who has love for themselves and others around them.

2.What motivated you to get involved in being inspirational for change?

Lots of things have inspired me during my life. My first inspiration has been my mum – who from a young age instilled in me the importance of economic independence as a girl/woman; my son – as I want to make positive change for his generation; and from my own media work as I have had the privilege of meeting so many unsung heroes doing important work at grass-root level creating change.

3.What are some key characteristics of an empowered person?

Confident, fearless, joyful, passionate, hardworking, patient with an inner freedom.

4.What can leaders or individuals interested in advocacy do to facilitate empowerment?

To just do it, not over think it. To work with their passion and know it will happen.

5.What advice would you give to those who want to give up due to a lack of empowered feeling, thinking and action? (e.g. What is an important first step)

Remember that there is no ‘timing of when’ as being impatient can actually disempower us. So, take the stress of ‘when’ from yourself. Go out in nature and reconnect with yourself and your passion through breathing, and meditation. Get creative, find the joy in small things. Oh! and read a good book or re-read one of your favourite books.
