Interview

1.What is your definition of women empowerment?

Women empowerment to me means giving a woman the power to make decisions, the power and ability to enjoy their rights, to control resources, assets, income and their own time. It also speaks to the ability to be bold to face threats, risks and manage the risks as well as converting a threat into an opportunity. A lot of people think that the male counterpart hinders a woman from the above, yet some women will have the support ’from the male counterpart yet they just lack that drive to believe in themselves.

2.What motivated you to get involved in being inspirational for change?

Growing up being marginalised. Being raised as a poor girl gave me a natural zeal to aim for higher so that I could cover up for the gap created when I couldn’t control dynamics in my life. The willingness to be independent and being able to stand for who I am, anything or anyone, pushed me to achieve more in life. I also did not want my children to look up to ’other people like I do when I am there. I look up for people like Oprah, Mitchell Obama but I want my children to look up to me.

3.What are some key characteristics of an empowered person?

• Independent
• Freedom
• Make decisions
• Happy and daring
• Define the new normal
• Outspoken and
• Take criticism in a mature way

4.What can leaders or individuals interested in advocacy do to facilitate empowerment?

• Grooming and coaching
• Sponsoring personal development for those with potential
• Talent Management
• Affording the potentials with opportunities.
• Documenting success stories

5.What advice would you give to those who want to give up due to a lack of empowered feeling, thinking and action? (e.g. What is an important first step)

Life is full of challenges. Be ready to face these. Those who are successful are a result of interfacing challenges. Turn your voice into an invoice. The moment you start to speak about who you are , what you want , slowly you will be confident to go for what you believe in. Keep on falling, but fall forward. Slowly you will get there. The rule is never fall backwards.
